# Information About General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)
We may collect and use information from European Economic Area (EEA) residents. This section explains how data is collected, why, and how we protect it.
What Is GDPR?
GDPR is an EU-wide privacy and data protection law regulating how EU residents' data is protected and enhancing their control. It applies to globally operating companies, not just EU-based businesses. Our customers' data protection is important regardless of location, which is why we've implemented GDPR controls as our baseline standard worldwide.
What Is Personal Data?
Personal data relates to identifiable or identified individuals. GDPR covers information used alone or combined to identify a person, including financial information, political opinions, genetic data, biometric data, IP addresses, physical address, sexual orientation, and ethnicity.
Data Protection Principles require:
- Personal data be processed fairly, legally, and transparently, used as reasonably expected.
- Personal data be collected for specific purposes and used only for those purposes; organizations must specify why when collecting.
- Personal data be held no longer than necessary.
- People covered by GDPR have rights to access their data, request copies, and request updates, deletion, restriction, or data portability.
Why Is GDPR Important?
GDPR adds requirements for protecting individuals' personal data and raises compliance stakes through increased enforcement and larger breach fines. Beyond compliance, it's the right thing to do. HelpFlow believes data privacy is important and maintains solid security and privacy practices exceeding this regulation's requirements.
Individual Data Subject's Rights — Data Access, Portability, and Deletion
HelpFlow is committed to helping customers meet GDPR data subject rights requirements. We process or store all personal data in fully vetted, DPA-compliant vendors. We store conversation and personal data for up to 6 years unless your account is deleted, in which case we dispose of all data per our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy within 60 days.
We recognize EU customers need to provide their customers ability to access, update, retrieve, and remove personal data. We've been set up for self-service from the start, always providing access to your and your customers' data. Our support team answers API-related questions.
